Education and Experience
Mark, a Southern California native, earned his Associate of Science degree with a major in Graphic Design from Eagle Gate College in Murray, UT in 2004. He graduated with honors with a 4.0 GPA.
With his new found passion in Graphic Design. He looked to expand his knowledge of creativity by including work in the field of 3D modeling. Graphic Design, being a fairly new field in education at the time, there were limited options in Utah, so he decided to relocate to Arizona to attend The Art Institute of Phoenix in Phoenix, AZ. There he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Media Arts and Animation.
After graduating from The Art Institute of Phoenix, Mark found very few opportunities available in field of animation and 3D modeling. Struggling find employment in a job market now saturated with job seekers with his same skills, he decided to fall back on his graphic design skills which were what he was best at anyway.
Geared with these new tools of 3D modelling, he looked to use them in his graphic design efforts. His first chance to utilize them was in creating CD jewel case labels for aspiring musicians. He was able to use 3D models of jewel cases and insert the case images to provide realistic mock-up to show the musicians.
Mark then worked a variety graphic design positions for various companies, becoming frustrated with the oppressive and prejudicial work environments in which he kept finding himself. Things changed drastically when he attended a large job fair event and found a fantastic job on a whim.
It was a job fair being held in a sports arena with a large number of potential employers. As with previous job fairs, Mark was disappointed by lack of opportunities for graphic designers. While making his way through the booths, he happened on the education section. Naturally, they were looking for students. One of these mentioned teaching as a possible career path. On a whim, Mark gave his resume and didn’t much more about it. He was later offered a teaching position at ITT Technical Institute in the Visual Communications program, which he accepted. It was a joy being able to pass on the knowledge he had accumulated over the years and it reignited his passion for graphic design. There he became one of the highest rated instructors in that program by students. He continued working there until after a steady decline in available classes to teach, the school closed it’s doors.
It was now time to start a new chapter. It was again difficult to find work due to a new trend in the field to hire primarily fresh young graduates who would work for less than their value. Having heard along the way that print industry experience was sought after in applicants, Mark took a position working for a commercial printing company named Capitol Litho in the Pre-Press department. Here he grew in knowledge and skills significantly.
After working in Pre-Press for several years, Mark eventually landed in a Marketing Coordinator position at a structural engineering firm. He is currently happy and working for Caruso Turley Scott Structural Engineers.
